Small specimens are used to characterize material properties through destructive testing. Allowables (statistical tolerance intervals) are computed from such tests to guide
structure designs. When a material or product involves random effects, such as batch-to-batch variation, these
tolerance intervals can be affected dramatically. To safeguard the integrity of structures designed with this material, it is critical to incorporate the contribution of these random effects in allowable computation. This talk describes some
existing military standards for allowables used in the aviation industry under normality, and examines some approaches for non-normal data.
