In this talk we propose a general architecture via which competing risks as well as degradation modeling can be done in a unified manner. The architecture entails dependent stochastic processes that are monotonically increasing. Candidate processes are the maximum of a Brownian Motion and versions of the Markov Additive process. Failure occurs when any one of the processes hits a random threshold. The threshold must necessarily have an exponential distribution with scale one. This talk is expository.
